New league statistics published, January 9

The minor league historical statistics project is pleased to announce the publication of statistical totals from eight leagues.  Newly published today are balanced statistics from the 2000-2003 South Atlantic League and the 2000 Florida State League.  In addition, proofed statistics from the 1956 American Association, International League, and Pacific Coast League are available.  The 1956 leagues build on our coverage of that era's AAA leagues, which is a focus area for 2010. The statistical tabulations published in that era generally omitted players in less than ten games, and also generally lacked pitching team totals. These leagues would prove fertile ground for researchers interested in becoming active in working with game-level data to help fill the gaps.

These updates are reflected in the SABR Encyclopedia, and bring our total of leagues which have completed the review process up to 247.

Credit for today's new additions goes out to Cliff Blau, Art Cantu, Stephen Davis, and Frank Hamilton. If you are interested in volunteering, contact the SABR Encyclopedia editors at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

2010: A statistical odyssey

The committee project to compile statistics for historical minor leagues made excellent progress in 2009.  Using Ed Washuta's database as a foundation, the crew is proud that, as 2010 dawns, we have digitized the statistics for 239 league-seasons. The list, which is updated nightly, is available here on the committee site at http://research.sabr.org/minors/historical-statistics/completed-leagues.

Statistics are available immediately upon completion in the new SABR Encyclopedia, and propagate out to baseball-reference.com on a regular basis.

For 2010, we have set a goal that on or about Opening Day, our list of completed leagues will comprise all affiliated minor leagues from 1992 forward, and all independent leagues from 2000 forward. We may not quite hit that target, but at our current pace of progress, we should come close.

Looking further into the future, by Opening Day 2011, we hope to be able to provide complete statistics back to 1978 for all leagues, and back to about World War II for the International and Pacific Coast Leagues and American Association.

This is a volunteer project, so the speed with which we can make these leagues available is directly proportional to the time and passion volunteers invest.
